14 North Korean migrants arrested in Chiang Rai
CHIANG RAI, Sept 17 (TNA) – Fourteen North Korean illegal migrants, including children, were arrested Thursday morning near Chiang Saen port in this northern Thai Mekong River province.
Pol Lt-Col Suluck Sangiamluck of the Chiang Saen Marine Police Station said his team apprehended a group of illegal North Korean migrants on the Chiang Saen-Chiang Khong highway, near Chiang Saen port.
Three men and 11 women including a seven-month old female infant were from the two southernmost provinces of North Korea.
Speaking through an interpreter, all of the party, aged between two and 51, left North Korea and travelled through China and Laos.
After arriving in Laos, they headed to Chiang Saen district office by speed boat to wait for Thai agents to bring them to Bangkok.
Before reaching Thailand, Sae Miang Sul, one of the illegal migrants, claimed a man claiming to be a Lao government soldier seized 3,800 yuan (about US$543) and threatened all the Koreans with his rifle.
The North Koreans, therefore, crossed from Laos to Chiang Rai by speed boat for immediate safety reasons.
All were detained at Chiang Saen police station and charged with illegal immigration by local investigators, according to the police.
Earlier this month, Chiang Saen marine police arrested a group of 10 illegal North Korean immigrants, including children, while they were waiting for the Thai human trafficking agent who would bring them deeper into Thailand before sending them to seek asylum in South Korea. (TNA)
