Chile Adopts Japanese Terrestrial Digital TV Format
Tokyo, Sept. 15 (Jiji Press)--Chile has decided to use Japan's
format for terrestrial digital television broadcasting, becoming the fourth
country to adopt the Japanese method over rival U.S. and European standards,
the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry said Tuesday.
Chile adopted the Japanese format on the ground that it is less
vulnerable to wave interferences and assures clear reception of signals even
under the mobile environment, ministry officials said.
The move is expected to help Japanese electronics companies take
the lead in developing and supplying related products, such as signal
transmitters and TV sets, for the Latin American market, in which Brazil,
Peru and Argentina have already picked the Japanese format, analysts said.
Japan will provide Chile with technical and human resource
development assistance so that the South American nation can shift to
digital TV services in March 2010 as scheduled, the officials said.
