Mourners farewell actor Ray Barrett
Award-winning actor Ray Barrett has been remembered as a generous and funny man in a
poignant ceremony on the Gold Coast.
The 82-year-old actor died on Tuesday at a local hospital after a fall at his home.
About 30 people gathered at the Allambie Memorial Gardens at Nerang on Monday.
Barrett's wife Gaye and son Reg paid tribute to the father of three and grandfather
of five, standing near the coffin adorned by a black and white portrait, a single
candle and an arrangement of native flowers.
She said she was "totally lost" without Barrett.
"I've lost my hero, my soul mate," she said, describing her husband as generous and
funny.
Reg reflected on summers spent with his father, fishing and sailing on Stradbroke
Island, off the southern Queensland coast.
"Dad ... thanks for teaching us to fish, how to hold a line, how to recognise a bite
from the pull of the tide," he said.
The service was shown a video tribute to the actor, featuring his many film, stage
and television appearances.
Barrett appeared alongside John Hargreaves and Graham Kennedy in the screen
adaptation of David Williamson's play Don's Party, but is most famous for his role
in director Fred Schepisi's The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, for which he won an AFI
Award for best actor.
He also made many appearances in television series.
His last major role was as the character Ramsden in Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia.
