No final conclusion on Caspian Sea in Tehran’s absence: Iran

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi said there could be no final conclusion for the Caspian Sea issue in the absence of Iran.

Talking to reporters on Monday during his weekly press briefing, he stressed Iran’s persistence on its rights in the Caspian Sea and said Iran followed quite an active diplomacy regarding the issue.

He further stressed that, based on the international regulations governing enclosed waters and lakes, any legal regimes for the Caspian Sea should come as the result of a prior consensus among its littoral states.

Commenting on the recent meeting in Kazakhstan which was held with the participation of the Caspian Sea littoral states excluding Iran, he said Iran’s diplomatic reactions forced the host to stress that the meeting was not to focus on the sea’s legal regime.

As for Iran’s nuclear program, he said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had already made it clear that Iran was not going to negotiate its absolute right for the nuclear technology but was ready for talks with the 5+1 group within the framework of Iran’s package of proposals, while emphasizing on the issue of universal nuclear disarmament to remove certain concerns.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Foreign Ministry spokesman criticized some Arab media for “having transformed into Iran’s opposition” and said they were acting with irresponsibility and unprofessionally and like interventionists.

He believed such media triggered a wave of “media hooliganism” through their TV channels or the other forms of media they possessed thus fanning the flames of differences.

Qashqavi hoped they reconsidered their lines of actions and moved towards enhancing atmosphere of understanding.

Qashqavi also elaborated on the upcoming visit of President Ahmadinejad to New York, saying that he will attend the United Nations General Assembly, hold talks with his counterparts from different world countries and hold meetings with Iranians residing abroad as well as a number of leading media people and intellectuals.

In an answer to a question by one of the reporters participating in his press briefing about Iran-Egypt relations, the ranking diplomat described the two countries as two big potentials the Islamic world possessed and said using this immense capacity would serve the unity among Muslim states.
