Commerce ministry confident Thai exports will grow over 10% in 2010
CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Sept 13 (TNA) - Thailand’s exports will begin improving from the last quarter of this year and would turn around to grow at least 10 per cent in 2010, Permanent Secretary for Commerce Siripol Yodmuangcharoen said on Sunday.
Mr Siripol, who accompanied Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai to South Africa on an export development mission to increase Thai shipments to African countries, said that initial figures compiled by the Customs Department showed that exports in August contracted 17-18 per cent compared to over 20 per cent in previous months this year.
There are signs that the country’s exports will turn positive from the last quarter this year and that exports would contract between 15-19 per cent overall in 2009, he said.
Thai commercial attaches assigned to positions worldwide will meet with Mrs. Pornthiva this week to develop an overview of the Thai export picture for 2009 and 2010 as the global economy has begun recovery and purchase orders for Thai goods are increasing.
The Thai-European Forum, a two-day event opening Thursday at Impact Muang Thong Thani exhibition and convention centre, will be attended by representatives from over 20 European Union member countries attending could help widen Thai exports and investments in those countries as well as investment.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will preside at the opening ceremony and speak on ‘Deepening and Widening Business Relations’. (TNA)
