AZERBAIJAN PARLIAMENT`S VICE SPEAKER MEETS CoE CONGRESS OF LOCAL AND REGIONAL AUTHORITIES` PRESIDENT a.i.
Baku, 12 September (AzerTAc). Vice speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament (Milli Majlis) Ziyafat Asgarov has met Friday with visiting President a.i. of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities Ian Micallef.
Asgarov said there was very good relationship between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe. He noted Micallef`s current visit would contribute to developing bilateral cooperation even more.
According to Asgarov, Azerbaijan`s authorities, including Parliament attaches great importance to developing democracy in the country. “Municipal elections to be held in December this year in the country will be a successful step in this direction”, he added.
Asgarov underlined making amendments and supplements to the Constitution of Azerbaijan by 18 March referendum was a part of the democratization process in the country.
He added in accordance with one of the amendments made to the Constitution, municipalities shall lay report before Milli Majlis.
“The process of merging small municipalities is underway in the country that will further stimulate development of these democratic institutions”.
Asgarov said his country had already fulfilled majority of its obligations towards the Council of Europe. “Work on realizitaion of other obiligations is underway”.
He also said Azerbaijan was ready to carry out recommendations by the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities regarding the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
Ian Micallef, in turn, said the Congress highly values the work done in Azerbaijan to develop democracy.
He noted the Congress intends to monitor the upcoming municipal elections in Azerbaijan.

The same day, Ian Micallef also met with chairman of Milli Majlis committee on international relations and inter-parliamentary ties Samad Seyidov.
