Australia `needs to improve education`

A new international education report shows Australia needs to lift its game when it
comes to schooling, Education Minister Julia Gillard says.
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) annual education
report, released on Tuesday, compares the education systems of all 30 member
countries and six partner nations.
Ms Gillard said the report revealed Australia's education system performed above
OECD averages in a number of areas.
But it also found Australia hadn't invested enough in rewarding quality teaching,
literacy and numeracy basics and early childhood and higher education.
"The report shows that there is a desperate need for an education revolution in this
nation, following more than a decade of neglect under the previous Liberal
government," Ms Gillard said.
She said Labor was addressing these shortfalls through its Building the Education
Revolution program.
