Suzuki to build new passenger car plant in India
TOKYO, Sept. 5 Kyodo -
Suzuki Motor Corp. said Saturday it will build a new passenger car plant in
India in 2011 with a total investment of about 20 billion yen to meet growing
local demand.
The new plant with annual output capacity of about 250,000 units will be
constructed adjacent to its existing production facility in the state of
Haryana, about 50 kilometers southwest of New Delhi.
While noting that the Indian market will continue to expand, company Chairman
and President Osamu Suzuki told a news conference that the construction of the
new plant will help the automaker reduce production costs.
Passenger car production at an aging plant in India will be shifted to the new
factory, while another car assembling plant will be converted to an engine
plant, the maker of small passenger cars said.
The overall annual production capacity in India will be about 1.1 million units
when the new plant begins operation.
The automaker has a market share of about 50 percent in India.
