10 illegal North Koreans arrested in Chiang Rai
CHIANG RAI, Sept 4 (TNA) – Thai authorities in Chiang Rai arrested a party of illegal North Koreans on Friday, according to marine police in the Mekong River district of Chiang Saen.
Misunderstanding that the police vehicles patrolling the area belonged to the Thai human trafficking agent who would bring them deeper into Thailand before sending them to South Korea, 10 North Korean would-be asylum seekers to South Korea -- including children -- were arrested by police when they emerged from roadside bushes in Sob-Ruek village and rushed to the police vehicles.
Pol Lt-Col Suluck Sangiamluck of Chiang Saen Marine Police Station said his team were patrolling areas around Chiang Saen-Mae Sai highway located along Mekong River after being tipped off about human smuggling through the border.
According to the police, illegal immigration often takes place along the Chiang Saen-Mae Sai highway.
Speaking through an interpreter, they confessed that they departed from the southernmost province of North Korea, and travelled through China and Laos by car.
After arriving in Thailand, they headed to the port in bordering Chiang Saen by speed boat, where they planned to wait for agents to pick them up before travelling onward to South Korea, according to an initial investigation.
All the North Korean migrants entering Thailand illegally were detained at Chiang Saen police station and charged with illegal immigration by local investigators. They later will be deported, according to the police. (TNA)
