Teen shot dead was cop killers' brother
The father of a Sydney teenager shot dead by police says his family has been
targeted by police since two other sons were convicted of killing an officer.
Tavito Taufahema, 18, died on Monday after being shot by police during a bungled
armed robbery at Canley Heights Hotel in Sydney's west.
Media reports on Wednesday said he was the younger brother of John and Montekiai
Taufahema, both jailed for killing Senior Constable Glenn McEnallay.
Sen Const McEnallay, 26, was shot while pursuing a stolen car at Hillside, in
Sydney's southeast, in March 2002.
The brothers are each serving an 11-year maximum term with a seven-year non-parole
period.
Their father, Loatoua Taufahema, on Wednesday told AAP he believed his family had
been targeted by police.
He said he was yet to find out details about the shooting, including whether Tavito
Taufahema was wearing a balaclava when he was shot.
"The way we look at it is anyone with the name Taufahema will be on the police
spotlight," he said.
"They are hassling us ever since our sons were convicted.
"I believe (Tavito's death) has happened because of that."
Loatoua Taufahema said he had spoken to his sons, John and Montekiai, about their
younger brother's death.
"They feel sad, obviously, but say it's only because of the Taufahema name," he said.
Mr Taufahema added that his son, who had still been living at home, was a "good kid"
and promising rugby union player with the Parramatta club.
Police have said they were forced to shoot the 18-year-old after a firearm was aimed
at them. The death is the subject of an internal police review.
A 16-year-old male accused of being Tavito Taufahema's accomplice has been charged
over the armed robbery. He has been refused bail to face Parramatta Children's Court
on October 8.
