Second batch of H1N1 seed virus cultured for vaccine trials produces higher yield

BANGKOK, Aug 31 (TNA) – The second batch of the seed virus for the Influenza Type A (H1N1), cultured in hen eggs for Thailand’s special vaccine trial, has resulted in a higher yield than the first batch, according to Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) managing director Witit Artavatkun.

The quality of the seed virus liquid of the second lot is also better than the first one. The calculation of the virus amount will be conducted in the next few days, he said.

The GPO’s H1N1 vaccine trials in human is scheduled to begin on September 7 as in the original plan. Now, the vaccine is being tested in animals and the result of the animal trials will be known next week, he added.

Speaking about the site chosen for mass vaccine production after the success of the human vaccine trials, he said it is decided that a laboratory at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangmod campus, was selected.

The budget of Bt200 million will be sought from the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) to upgrade the laboratory. (TNA)
