Most Bangkokians approve of Internal Security Act use: Poll

BANGKOK, Aug 26 (TNA) – Nearly 80 per cent of Bangkok respondents agreed with the government’s plan to impose the Internal Security Act (ISA) in a key central district of the capital during this weekend’s expected gathering of the anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), according to poll results released on Wednesday.

The poll, probing public sentiment on the imposition of tougher law enforcement in Dusit district this weekend, beginning Saturday and carrying through Monday (August 29 through September 1) was conducted among a random sample by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University of 1,078 Bangkok residents Tuesday and Wednesday.

Seventy-six per cent supported the Cabinet’s imposition of the ISA, saying the measures would prevent possible acts of incitement to violence and protect Government House and other government offices in the area as well as maintain law and order during the red-shirt rally.

Around 15 per cent felt indifferent to the security measures, believing unrest might not occur, so that imposing the ISA was overreaction on the government’s part.

Meanwhile, 9 per cent of respondents disagreed with the enforcement, saying that the UDD has the right to stage a peaceful protest and that the heavy duty security may incite them and create tension.

Asked how they would try to manage the UDD rally peacefully if the respondents were acting as premier, one fifth – 21 per cent of those surveyed -- said they would not apply any violent measures against the demonstrators.

Some 29 per cent thought that negotiation and compromise between security personnel and the UDD protesters was the proper means to solve the tension while 23 per cent would apply law and order to deal with the demonstration and the situation.

Meanwhile, nearly 9 per cent would allow the police to take action, control and monitor the gathering without intervention.

Nearly 8 per cent would give rights and freedoms to people to stage a protest under the law.

The opinion survey was conducted in response to the Tuesday’s decision by the Cabinet to revoke the ISA in Dusit district where the UDD will stage its rally.

The anti-government Red Shirts earlier announced that they would gather at the Royal Plaza on Rajdamnoen Nok Avenue and would march to Government House to call on the prime minister to dissolve the House of Representatives due to poor performance and alleged corruption in the Community Sufficiency Economy Project.
