Cop's roadside death may prompt changes
The roadside death of a police constable has brought a host of recommendations from
the NSW Coroner to improve the safety of highway patrol officers.
NSW police commissioner Andrew Scipione says all relevant commands will consider the
proposed changes, which relate to operating procedures and additional training for
police.
Peter Gordon Wilson was one of a number of officers conducting a roadside operation
on the F3 Freeway in November 2006, when a car struck the 41-year-old father of
three.
The incident happened at Somersby, north of Sydney, and inflicted serious injuries
to Wilson, who later died in hospital.
Mr Scipione said on Tuesday that deputy state coroner Hugh Dillon handed down 11
recommendations after an inquest into the senior constable's death.
"I will be considering the recommendations after consulting with our traffic
services branch and safety command," Mr Scipione said in a statement.
"The loss of Gordie Wilson has been a tragic blow for his family and loved ones, as
well as his many police colleagues and friends.
"The (police force) will endeavour to make any operational changes that keeps our
police safe."
