FORMER U.S. UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE MAKES PRESENTATION AT ROUNDTABLE MEETING IN BAKU

Baku, 25 August (AzerTAc). Marc Grossman, former U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, made a presentation at a roundtable meeting on the theme “Challenges Of Diplomacy In The 21st Century” organized Monday by the Strategic Research Center under the President of Azerbaijan.
The meeting brought together officials of the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry, Diplomatic Academy, parliamentarians, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Baku and regional and international relations experts.
Participants discussed the main challenges diplomacy faces in the 21st century including globalization, fight against extremism and terrorism, prevention of weapons of mass destruction proliferation and protection of environment.
In his remarks, Grossman stressed the necessity of increasing efforts towards training a new diplomatic corps capable of dealing with the mentioned challenges. He noted relevant successful steps had been taken in Azerbaijan.
Grossman also replied to questions regarding energy security issues, in particular Nabucco project, activities of diplomats to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the current state of and prospects for relations between the United States and the Muslim world, as well as democracy and human rights.
As part of his visit to Azerbaijan, Mark Grossman has met with Head of Strategic Research Center Elkhan Nuriyev, Chief of Political Analysis and Information Provision Department of the Azerbaijan President`s Administration Elnur Aslanov, Deputy Foreign Minister, rector of Diplomatic Academy Hafiz Pashayev, Vice-Speaker of Milli Majlis Valeh Alasgarov, Chief of the International Relations Department of the Presidential Administration Novruz Mammadov and Head of the Milli Majlis Committee for International Relations and Inter-parliamentary Ties Samad Seyidov.
