PM not keen on Bali bomb site proposal

(AAP) - People should not be allowed to "trample on the memories" of those people who died in the Bali nightclub bombing, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says.

Fairfax reported on Monday the Bali Peace Park Foundation was struggling to raise
funds to build a park and memorial on the site where 202 people died in the Sari
Club bombing in 2002.
The report said the site's owner, nightclub boss Kadek Wiranatha, plans to build a
new nightclub and restaurant complex on the land.
Mr Rudd wants the site to be maintained in a respectful way.
"I believe that when it comes to the future of that site, we shouldn't have anything
which allows people to trample on the memories of those who tragically lost their
lives in Bali," he told reporters.
Mr Rudd said the government would receive advice in the next week or so on whether
the Bali Peace Park Foundation could be granted tax-free charitable status.
Bali Peace Park Foundation member Phil Britten says the group is struggling to raise
funds to build the park because it had not been given tax-free charitable status by
the federal government.
Mr Rudd said the advice would come from Treasury and be received by Treasurer Wayne
Swan.
