Spokesman urges G5+1 to reconsider confronting policy towards Iran
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi urged the 5+1 Group on Monday to reconsider its confronting policy towards Iran and try to adopt a policy for having interaction with the country.
“The policy to intensify sanctions against Iran has failed,” the spokesman told reporters at his weekly press briefing.
He added, “Nothing could stop Iran from pursuing its legitimate rights.”
Qashqavi stressed that Tehran would “continue its cooperation” with the International Atomic Energy Agency within the frameworks of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and that the country has so far fulfilled its commitments based on the IAEA’s Safeguards Agreement.
Commenting on a report to be issued within coming days by the UN nuclear watchdog’s Director General Mohamed ElBaradei on Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities, Qashqavi stressed that the IAEA should refrain from pursuing a political approach in this connection.
Based on the agency’s regulations, the IAEA chief should hand over his latest report to the Board of Governors between 10 days to two weeks before its meetings.
The next meeting of the board which is to continue for a week is to start on September 7 at the UN office in Vienna, Austria.
ElBaradei will leave his post at the IAEA's chief on December 1.
Responding a question about allegations on Iran’s interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, Qashqavi termed them as “unfounded accusations.”
He reiterated, “Iran favors restoration of peace, security and stability to Iraq.”
Commenting on the possibility of reducing the level of Iran-Germany relations, the spokesman said that the Foreign Ministry had “no plan to reduce the level of bilateral ties with Germany or with any other country.”
