AZERI CANOEISTS GIVEN TRIUMPHANT WELCOME
Baku, August 19 (AzerTAc). Hundreds of fans, including sport officials and family members have packed the Heydar Aliyev international airport to give a triumphant welcome to Azerbaijani canoeists who won three medals, a gold, silver and bronze, in the world championship in Canada.
Gold came from Valentin Demyanenko in the single`s 200-m race, while silver and bronze medals came from the Sergey Bezuglov/Maksim Prokopenko double in the 1000m- and 500m-races.
Valentin Demyanenko said the competition was very tough. “I believed that I can win only on the finish line”.
The world champ also thanked the fans for the “tremendous support during the tournament”.
Demyanenko also said “it was of extreme pleasure to receive congratulations from President Ilham Aliyev”.
