Iran supports democratic election in Afghanistan
The Islamic Republic of Iran supports fledgling democracy in Afghanistan and the democratic presidential election due to be held on August 20.
Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and the Pacific Affairs, Mohammad-Mehdi Akhoundzadeh, made the remarks to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony to mark India’s Independence Day.
Despite Taliban boycotted the presidential election, the Afghan people are willing to determine their own choice through democratic means, Akhoundzadeh said.
Iran believes that Afghanistan’s destiny should be shaped by the Afghan nation themselves, the Iranian official added.
Asked about Iran’s stance on the US and the UK policies on dividing Taliban to “good and bad”, Akhoundzadeh answered the Afghan people do not trust the foreign forces any more because they could not help bring stability to the country.
Responding to a question about India’s presence in IPI gas pipeline, Iran’s deputy foreign minister said that agreement on Iran-Pakistan-India gas deal was an important decision made by Pakistani government to meet its needs to gas.
