Thailand, Malaysia to foster cross-border cooperation

BANGKOK/KOTA KINABALU, Aug 15 (TNA) – Thailand and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation aiming to boost cross-border trade and tourism, Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said on Friday.

Attending the 2nd Thailand-Malaysia Committee on Joint Development Strategy for border areas (JDS) and the 11th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JC) in Malaysia's Kota Kinabalu which ended on Friday,

Mr Kasit said the meetings considered several issues concerning the well-being of their people living near the border through infrastructure and transport linkages, in particular the second cross-border bridge across the Kolok River in Narathiwat.

The bridge, at which the prime ministers of both countries are scheduled to preside over an opening ceremony on December 2, aimed to promote tourism industry.

In addition, Thailand and Malaysia have agreed to secure the position of Thai workers in Malaysia by standardising identification cards, Mr Kasit said.

He said cooperation in Islamic banking was also discussed at the meetings.

"We (Thailand) already have an Islamic banking industry, but it is still small, so we would like to develop it further, Malaysia's Bernama news agency quoted Mr Kasit as saying.

"We have also agreed to explore a 'triangular cooperation' on Islamic banking with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)," he told reporters.

Mr Kasit said Thailand is also interested in learning how to develop the halal food production industry in the private sector and work together, instead of competing against one another, in the industry.

Both nations also agreed to transfer technology in agricultural products as well as to exchange students for cultural studies and sports, the Thai foreign minister said.

The JDS is a bilateral initiative which aims to improve living condition of Thais in five southern border provinces and Malaysians in the four northern states of Malaysia.

The committee set up a number of projects to enhance the infrastructure, transportation, human resources, culture, tourism, agriculture and economy. (TNA)
