Another federal Liberal MP to retire
Federal Liberal MP Margaret May will retire from parliament at the next election,
due late next year.
Ms May, who since 1998 has held the electorate of McPherson, which extends from the
Gold Coast to the Queensland-NSW border, joins a growing list of Liberal MPs who
will not recontest their seats.
She has been the opposition spokeswoman on ageing since the 2007 election loss.
Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull praised Ms May for her work saying no other
member of parliament worked harder or knew more about issues affecting older
Australians.
"One of the most dedicated members in the parliament, Margaret has worked tirelessly
and assiduously for her local community over the last eleven years," Mr Turnbull
said in a statement on Friday.
Ms May's announcement follows similar decisions this year by Brendan Nelson, Peter
Costello, Petro Georgiou, David Hawker, Chris Pearce and Danna Vale.
