Thailand, Philippines agree to cooperate to achieve ASEAN Community

MANILA, Aug 14 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva praised the smooth-running bilateral relations between Thailand and the Philippines as testimony to the benefit of trust and confidence with each other, showing promise of cooperation to achieve the target to create an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Community by 2015.

Mr Abhisit’s one-day official visit to the Philippines on Friday to strengthen bilateral relations and multi-lateral cooperation included those in the context of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

At a dinner honouring his visit hosted by Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at Malacanang presidential palace he said that under the ASEAN Charter, Thailand would work shoulder to shoulder with the Philippines and other ASEAN members to make the grouping move forward to its common vision and desire.

Thailand will adhere to the plan to achieve the ASEAN Community by 2015, he said.

Thailand had confidence in the Philippines business foundation and will encourage more Thai companies to invest there. Meanwhile, he said, Thailand is ready to welcome Filipino investors and visitors.

During bilateral talks between the two leaders earlier in the day, Thailand and the Philippines agreed to expand trade and investment cooperation through existing mechanisms, including the Joint Committee on Trade, and a related committee on energy.

The leaders also discussed problems and obstacles hindering economic relations.

Thailand had asked the Philippines to relax import regulations on poultry and fruit, and agreed to joint sanitary inspection procedures.

Mr Abhisit said Thailand proposed to speed up the agreement to avoid double taxation and cooperate in tourism and single visa travel documents.

The Thai premier also said he had discussed Myanmar issue with the Philippines leader and agreed that the Myanmar's domestic politics had impacted the security of ASEAN as a whole.

Mr Abhisit said he expected the issue to be discussed at the ASEAN Summit in Thailand in October. (TNA)
