AZERBAIJAN`S FIFTH AND SIXTH PERIODIC REPORT ON ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION HEARD IN GENEVA

Baku, 13 August (AzerTAc). Azerbaijan`s fifth and sixth periodic report on International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination was heard during the 75th session of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on August 11-12 in Geneva.
Attending the event, Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov briefed the Committee members on the legal basis created in Azerbaijan for protection of and promotion to human rights and freedoms.
He underscored the importance of the amendments made to the Constitution of Azerbaijan in terms of strengthening human rights and freedoms.
Khalafov also told of the work done in his country to prevent racial discrimination and to fulfill obligations to ensure the rights of national minorities, promote tolerance, protect foreigners and persons without citizenship, strengthen gender equality, fight corruption and human trafficking, as well as the Heydar Aliyev Foundation`s programs and projects to promote inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue.
He also touched upon the consequences of Armenia`s aggression against Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Government`s work to improve the social situation of refugees and IDPs.
Then, members of the Azerbaijani delegation answered the questions concerning the report.
The Committee members praised the fact that the Azerbaijani Government has done a lot to fulfill obligations towards the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, strengthen fight against human trafficking, increase the independence of legal system, improve the situation of refugees, IDPs and migrants as well as protect the language, culture, customs and traditions of national minorities.
