Aussie troops kill Afghan police officer
An Afghan police officer has been shot dead and another wounded by Australian
soldiers after they failed to stop at a security checkpoint.
The two Afghan men were travelling on a motorcycle when they failed to comply with
verbal and visual signals to stop at the checkpoint at Dorafshan, north of the
Australian base at Tarin Kowt.
The Australian soldier came under small arms fire following the incident.
Acting Chief of Joint Operations Command, Air Vice Marshal Greg Evans, said the two
Afghan men were not wearing uniforms at the time of the incident.
"According to incident reporting, the men were later confirmed by Afghan National
Police as being ANP members although they were not wearing uniforms and did not
identify themselves as police members," he said in a statement.
The wounded Afghan was evacuated to the Tarin Kowt military hospital for emergency
treatment while the body of the deceased man would be handed to ANP.
The Australian troops involved had been deployed north of Tarin Kowt as part of
pre-election security operations.
The Australian Defence Force has launched an investigation into the incident.
In another incident, a Bushmaster struck an improvised explosive device during a
routine patrol in Oruzgan Province, but no Australians were wounded.
Australia has deployed an additional 120 soldiers to Afghanistan as part of the
international Election Support Force.
