181 Thais in Malaysia repatriated to motherland
SONGKHLA, Aug 10 (TNA) – Near 200 Thais who were maltreated and victimised in a human trafficking ring in Malaysia on Monday were returned to Thailand under a Malaysia-Thailand cooperation protocol, according to a senior official of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.
Wanlop Phloytabtim, Permanent Secretary for Social Development and Human Security Ministry, presided over the repatriation ceremony for 181 Thais who were detained in neighbouring Malaysia.
The event, held in Sadao district of the southern province of Songkhla, also marked the birthday of Her Majesty the Queen on August 12.
Thailand and Malaysia have cooperated to prevent and crack down on human trafficking rings.
According to Social Development and Human Security Ministry, the 181 Thai nationals -- 122 men and 59 women detained in Malaysia-- were victims of human trafficking for forced labour on fishing boats and in prostitution.
Nearly half the victims lived in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces—Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat—while others were from northeastern and northern provinces.
Among the returnees, some 50 persons were found to be carrying influenza and were being closely monitored as to whether it was Influenza Type A(H1N1).
After screening the returnees will be sent to their respective home provinces, and the authorities will provide medical and financial aid and rehabilitation, and provide protection from further trafficking. (TNA)
