Thai people traveling less due to economy, virus outbreak: BU poll
BANGKOK, Aug 7 (TNA) - Thais will travel less in the second half of this year, compared to the first half, due to the economic crisis and an outbreak of Influenza Type A(H1N1) according to an opinion poll conducted by the Bangkok University Research Center on Thai travel trends in the second half of this year.
The survey was conducted among 1,116 respondents from July 31 to August 2.
The survey found that 47.7 per cent of the respondents believed they would travel less during the rest of this year than they had in the first six months. Many indicated they might have to save money because they are not confident the economy will improve and they are worried about the outbreak of the Influenza Type A(H1N1). Over one-third -- 36 per cent -- said they would travel as much as they did in the first six months of this year.
Sixteen per cent of respondents said they would travel more because there are several long holidays during the winter when the weather is nice and they want to spend time with their families.
Thirty-six per cent of respondents said the outbreak of Influenza Type A(H1N1) is the factor that will most affect travel in the second half of this year while 35 per cent said that economic factors would mainly affect travel likelihood, and 27 per cent said political problems would affect their willingness to travel.
Asked about their confidence regarding the safety of travel during Thailand’s siege of Influenza Type A(H1N1) while traveling, almost twice as many respondents -- 64 per cent -- said they were not confident, and only 36 per cent said they were willing to travel.
Some 19 per cent of respondents said want the government and agencies concerned to revive the economy, 18.4 per cent want to see more public relations campaigns to promote tourism, followed by 18.4 per cent, who want discounted tour packages. (TNA)
