AMBASSADOR HIGHLIGHTS AZERBAIJAN`S OIL HISTORY IN KUWAIT TIMES DAILY
Baku, 5 August, (AzerTAc). Azerbaijan`s Ambassador to Kuwait, Shahin Abdullayev, has highlighted his country`s oil history in an article published by Kuwait Times, the first English language daily in the Arab Gulf.
In the article, titled “Azeri oil history: From Medieval centuries to modernity”, Abdullayev writes Azerbaijan has long standing experience in oil extraction.
“It is Azerbaijan that initiated the industrial method of producing oil by applying modern techniques and equipment, and in the middle of the 20th century the country accounted for 50% of the global oil production,” the article says.
The Ambassador writes that Azerbaijan played “a crucial role in the economic development of Caucasus”, calling Baku “the hub of the world oil trade”.
In the article Abdullayev also emphasizes Azerbaijan`s contribution to the front of the WWII.
“Azerbaijan accounted for 72% of the total volume of oil produced in the Soviet Union during the Second World War to provide the front with the fuel, making an outstanding contribution to the victory over fascism. Baku then became the primary strategic goal of Hitler and his allies… At that time about 90 percent of Soviet tanks and airplanes were powered with fuel from Baku…”
Abdullayev also highlights the nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev`s role in ensuring Azerbaijan`s independence and developing its oil and gas industry.
“Nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev`s oil strategy opened new horizons for Azerbaijan`s oil industry. The signing of the Contract of the Century on September 15, 1994 and the launch of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline marked a turning point in Azerbaijan`s oil history.”
The Ambassador also praises President Ilham Aliyev`s role in developing oil and gas industry of Azerbaijan.
Abdullayev writes: “Oil Strategy of nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev brings its positive results into Azerbaijan added by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. President Ilham Aliyev, too, highlighted the role of BTC pipeline in cementing peace, security and spirit of cooperation in the region during the opening ceremony of the BTC pipeline in May 2005. Based on the vision of Heydar Aliyev that "Oil is a major wealth of Azerbaijan which belongs not only to this generation, but also to future generations", under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev the Government of Azerbaijan attaches utmost importance on transparency and wise management of oil resources.”
“High-level of transparency and wise management of oil and gas revenues as a catalyst for development of entire economy, including the non-petroleum sectors of Azerbaijan which accounts for about 40 percent of GDP, and transformation of "black gold" into the "human gold" and sustainable development, is a vivid testimony to the fact that in the years of independence the natural resources of Azerbaijan are being used to create advanced conveniences and opportunities for this and future generations,” the Ambassador concludes.
