TOKYO, Aug. 1 Kyodo -
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso on Saturday expressed condolences over the
death of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, praising her achievement
of restoring democracy in the Philippines.
''Former President Aquino was the symbol of a restored democracy in the
Philippines and has contributed to promoting a friendly relationship between
our country and the Philippines,'' Aso said in a statement.
Aquino, popularly known as Cory and an icon of the ''people power'' movement,
reestablished democracy in the country during her tenure as president from 1986
to 1992.
Her husband Benigno Aquino Jr., a former senator, was assassinated in 1983,
which culminated in a people power revolution in 1986 that deposed then
President Ferdinand Marcos and swept Aquino into power.
Aquino died of cancer on Saturday. She was 76.
