Iran, Russia hold joint maritime exercises to clean up environment
Iran and Russia held the first joint maritime exercise to protect environment of the Caspian Sea and clean up oil pollution on the waters of the landlocked sea.
Gilan Ports and Maritime Organization said the exercise was held in the northern Iranian port city of Bandar-e-Anzali, Gilan province, dubbed as "Regional Interaction, Key to Safe and Clean Caspian Sea".
“The exercise is being held within the framework of international conventions such as Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation (OPRC), International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS Code),” Farhad Montaser Kouhsari said.
Over 30 modern vessels and two helicopters from Iran and one Russian anti-pollution vessel took part in the exercise to clean up the oil spills and pollutants from surface of the sea.
The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea.
It is an endorheic basin (it has no outflows), and is bound by northern Iran, southern Russia, western Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and eastern Azerbaijan.
It has a maximum depth of about 1,025 meters.
