PM expects Sondhi shooting case to be concluded this week
BANGKOK, July 27 (TNA) - The investigation into the failed assassination bid against People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) core leader Sondhi Limthongkul is expected to be finalised this week, according to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
Mr. Abhisit told reporters after receiving addition information from assistant police chief Pol. Lt-Gen. Assawin Kwanmuang that he would meet with Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban about the case before concluding the investigation.
The premier said he could not say the discussion would be held Monday or not but definitely no later than this week.
There are good signs that the investigation has progressed satisfactorily, as there will be additional arrest warrants issued, he said.
Gen. Assawin earlier said that the police are set to ask the court for arrest warrants for three more suspects connected to the shooting of Mr. Sondhi, a leading media entrepreneur turned political activist.
He did not, however, drop any hints as to whether the three suspects are police officers, military officers or civilians.
"Deputy Police Chief Pol. Gen. Thani Somboonsap is now investigating the case and gathering more evidence," said the assistant police chief. "Whether the mastermind behind Mr. Sondhi's murder attempt will be arrested or not depends on evidence."
The court earlier issued arrest warrants for two non-commissioned officers for their alleged involvement in the attempt on Mr. Sondhi’s life.
The two suspects still at large are identified as Pol. Cpl. Worawut Mungsanthi, assigned to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) and Sgt-Maj.1st Class Panya Srihaera, a non-commissioned officer from the Army’s Special Warfare Command in Lop Buri.
Gen. Assawin said he believes the two suspects will be taken into custody soon.
Mr. Abhisit said the case was progressing and he was reviewing the whole case including the obstacle to finalise the investigation but he would discuss with Suthep who was responsible for the security matter before making the next move.
Mr. Sondhi, a key leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) or so-called Yellow Shirts, was ambushed by gunmen in a pick-up truck on his way to work on April 17. He recovered after an operation to remove a bullet fragment from his skull. (TNA)
