Thaksin joins social networking to connect with supporters
BANGKOK, July 24 (TNA) – Thailand’s ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has launched his personal communication channel using popular social networking to communicate with his supporters, who are planning his 60th birthday celebrations on July 26, according to his former legal adviser Noppadol Pattama.
New accounts with the name ‘Thaksinlive’ are launched on Facebook and Twitter social networking. His pictures engaged in various activities are uploaded to viewers. His suggestions to the Democrat-led coalition government on particular issues such as preventive measures against Influenza A(H1N1) will be posted using the new communication services, said Mr Noppadol.
Mr Thaksin’s birthday celebrations will be held on Sunday by his supporters at the Kaewfah temple in Nonthaburi, Mr Noppadol said, adding that the event is not aimed at creating a rift as some of his supporters are intending to make merit on his birthday.
People in the North, Thaksin’s stronghold, reportedly planned to make 2492 cakes and prepare a 2492-metre long woven silk cloth as his birthday presents.
Pro-Thaksin groups nationwide also planned to hold merit-making ceremonies to mark his 60th birthday simultaneously on Sunday.
Besides a mass merit making ceremony at Kaewfah temple in Nonthaburi, the event in Bangkok will include offering food to monks at the Uthaitharam temple.
Mr Thaksin will be interviewed on a People Channel TV programme via video link, explaining his viewpoints and strategies to counter Thailand’s current problems. His topics are to include the spread of the A(H1N1) virus, poverty, economy, social issues, politics and the overall image of Thailand.
Holographic techniques will be used to create a three-dimensional image of Mr Thaskin to his supporters.
The video link will also connect with At Samat district in northeastern province of Roi Et, where Mr Thaksin visited in 2006 and tried out his experimental scheme against poverty called the ‘At Samat model.’
Meanwhile, Mr Satit Wonghnongtaey, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office said Mr Thaksin’s supporters can arrange a birthday bash for the former premier if such activities do not violate the law.
The government, Mr Satit said, will pay no attention to the event as it is too busy speeding up its work to solve pressing issues for the public rather than watching something that doesn’t benefit the people.
However, the interior ministry instructed provincial governors to monitor activities in their provinces to ensure that no unlawful acts are committed, he said.
Ousted in a September 2006 coup d’etat, Mr Thaksin, now lives in self-imposed exile overseas, and is believed to be in the UAE.
Mr Thaksin was earlier convicted and given a two-year jail term after he was found guilty of conflict of interest in his involvement in a Ratchadapisek land deal.
The ex-premier reportedly spends most of his time in Dubai after his visa status was rejected by the United Kingdom. (TNA)
