Swans disrespected club legends: Bolton
The meals served to Swans greats at their hall of fame dinner on Saturday night were
ruined by the sour taste of Sydney's ten-goal loss to Carlton just hours earlier,
Jude Bolton believes.
The Swans midfielder said the side's fourth quarter capitulation to the Blues before
the club honoured 23 Sydney greats was disrespectful to legends such as Bob Skilton
and Paul Kelly.
"To be over-run like we were against Carlton was really disappointing, especially
before a hall of fame dinner," Bolton said.
"It was a really disappointing effort.
"To put a sour taste in everyone's mouth at the function was pretty disrespectful
for all the players who have played beforehand."
Following a goalless fourth quarter, the Swans held their inaugural hall of fame
function which inducted 23 past players from the club's 135-year South Melbourne and
Sydney history.
Bolton said although the side entered the dinner carrying a heavy defeat, some of
the Swans' young up-and-comers were left with a new-found sense of club pride.
"We were disappointed but in saying that it was a great function still," he said.
"Just to show what the club's been through across the whole time, it was great for
some of the young guys like Dan Hannebery and Jesse White to see some of the
history.
"I was sitting on Dan Hannebery's table and Bob Skilton's coming up to him and
saying `go for it mate and just enjoy your career' and that's pretty special for
those young guys."
Many at the club are hoping this sense of pride in the red and white jumper will
continue to spur on young forward White, one of the few highlights in Sydney's
disappointing loss.
The 21-year-old White kicked four goals against Carlton and is being touted as a
long-term replacement for Barry Hall up front.
Bolton said White has all the makings of a quality forward and just needs to start
showing some consistency every week.
"He's a powerful young kid, he's got the speed and strength and we just need him to
really have that work rate and consistency over four quarters," Bolton said.
"I guess there's a lot of guys in that boat at the moment but Jesse has got all the
talent and he just needs to do the work and produce what he has in reserves, which
is a great start with four goals up forward."
Meanwhile Ted Richards, who suffered a punctured lung and broken ribs against
Carlton, is still in hospital while a chest drain continues to re-inflate his lung.
He is expected to be released on Thursday and will then spend a couple of days with
family in Melbourne until he returns to Sydney.
