Japan to grant $45 billion loan to Thailand
PHUKET, July 22 (TNA) - Japan said it will grant a US$45 million (Bt1.5 billion) loan to Thailand when the ministers of foreign affairs of both countries met Wednesday in bilateral talks on the sidelines of the 42th ASEAN ministerial meeting in the Thai resort island of Phuket.
Announcing the loan was Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kazuo Kodama who spoke at a press conference after the bilateral talks between Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone and Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya ended.
Mr. Kuzuo said that Japan is confident that Thailand will be able to boost investment and tourism in the kingdom despite the global economic slowdown.
"The Japanese government will grant a $45 million loan to Thailand to improve the drinking water system in the Thai capital," said Mr. Kuzuo. "We will also grant loans to Japanese small- and medium enterprises (SMEs) to invest in their businesses here in support of Japanese investment in Thailand."
Mr. Kuzuo added that the two ministers also signed a treaty to extradite convicted criminals between the two countries.
North Korea’s activities are a serious concern of the Japanese government, Mr. Kuzuo said, which the Thai and Japanese foreign ministers also discussed.
Both countries urged countries concerned to be patient in dealing with North Korea.
He said Japan expressed concern that the world community and ASEAN would adopt as soon as possible United Nations Security Council Resolution 1874 imposing added economic and commercial sanctions on North Korea in the aftermath of its underground nuclear test conducted in May. (TNA)
