Baghdad / NINA /- Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein affirmed Iraq's commitment to international law, UN resolutions, and relevant bilateral agreements concerning maritime borders.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release: "Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received a phone call from the Omani Foreign Minister, Badr Al-Busaidi, during which they discussed several regional issues of mutual interest."
The statement added: "During the call, Al-Busaidi briefed Fuad Hussein on the details of the upcoming negotiations between representatives of the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, scheduled to be held in Geneva under Omani mediation. The topics for discussion were reviewed, and the importance of ensuring the success of the negotiations was emphasized, as this would contribute to averting the threat of war in the region and strengthening security and stability."
The two sides also discussed the statement issued by the Kuwaiti government regarding the deposit of the Iraqi map with the United Nations.
According to the statement, the Foreign Minister addressed the background of the issue, noting that "the Kuwaiti government had deposited its maritime charts and baselines with the United Nations in 2014 without consulting Iraq at the time, while the Iraqi government only recently deposited its chart."
The importance of conducting discussions based on clear and legal foundations was emphasized, along with the need to define the Iraqi baseline in accordance with internationally recognized standards, as is the case with Kuwait.
Fuad Hussein affirmed that "Iraq believes in and adheres to international law in this area, as well as to relevant UN resolutions and bilateral agreements," stressing that the Iraqi government believes in resolving problems through negotiations and dialogue, respecting the sovereignty of states, and non-interference in their internal affairs./ End
