Malaysia Lawn Bowlers Invited To Compete In Commonwealth Games Test Series

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- National lawn bowlers continue to be highly regarded globally, with Malaysia invited to attend a series of test matches at the end of April, ahead of the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) president Awalan Abdul Aziz said that the test series will also feature three of the world's best teams: Australia, Scotland and England.

He said the selection of Malaysia as the only Asian representative was proof of the national lawn bowlers’ continued performance improvement in the last few years.

"I was surprised when notified of our selection to join the test series. If we look at the current standings, the top three teams in the world among the Commonwealth countries are Australia, Scotland and England.

"Usually, they would pick a team ranked fourth or fifth in the world, but they chose Malaysia, who finished seventh (one silver and one bronze) at the 2022 edition of the Games in Birmingham,” he said when met recently.

He also believes that Malaysia's selection is due to the national team's outstanding achievement in emerging as the overall champions at the 2025 World Cup, eclipsing the likes of Australia, Scotland and England here last November.

However, he believes the test series would be the best platform for the national lawn bowlers to gauge their real capabilities and strengthen their preparations for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23-Aug 2.

In Glasgow, four gold medals will be at stake in lawn bowls - men's and women's singles and men's and women's pairs.

Malaysia last won the Commonwealth Games lawn bowls gold medal at the 2018 edition in Gold Coast, Australia, through Siti Zalina Ahmad and Emma Firyana Saroji in the women's pairs event.
