PM Anwar Congratulates Japan's PM On LDP Election Victory

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has extended his warmest congratulations to Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae on the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) decisive victory in Japan’s general election.

“This resounding mandate reflects public confidence in her vision for Japan’s economic renewal and her ability to energise a new generation of voters,” he said in a Facebook post Monday.

Takaichi was in Malaysia for the ASEAN-led summits in October 2025, just days after first taking office.

The Prime Minister said Takaichi engaged with genuine commitment and enthusiasm on issues that matter to both countries, including economic resilience, the green transition and maritime security.

Anwar added that Malaysia is committed to sustaining momentum on these and other key priorities.

“She has famously said that she will 'work, work, work, work and work' for Japan.

“I look forward to working just as intensely with Prime Minister Takaichi to take the Malaysia-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to the next level,” he said.

According to Kyodo News Agency, Japan's ruling LDP, which has formed a coalition with the Japan Innovation Party, won a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives in Sunday's election, scoring a landslide victory.

Crossing the two-thirds majority threshold of 310 seats in the 465-member lower house means the LDP, the first party to achieve this in postwar Japan, can move towards amending the Constitution and passing bills even if they are rejected by the House of Councillors, where the ruling coalition remains in the minority.
