Thailand seeks clarification after "accidental" Cambodian mortar fire

BANGKOK, Jan 6 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Tuesday that Thailand is seeking a formal clarification from Cambodia regarding a cross-border mortar incident, which Phnom Penh has initially characterized as an "accident."

The fire landed earlier this morning at Hill 469 in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani province, injuring one Thai soldier who sustained shrapnel wounds to his right arm.

Following a meeting with Defense Minister Natthapon Nakpanich and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Anutin said the military has lodged a protest with Cambodian security forces.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a letter to Cambodia's foreign minister to notify them of the ceasefire violation and to request an official explanation.

While field-level communications indicated the firing was unintentional, the Prime Minister noted that Thailand is waiting for a formal response to determine its next steps.

He added that while Thai forces remain prepared to respond appropriately, the situation does not currently require the evacuation of local civilians. - 819 (TNA)
