Harnwell injury mars Glory performance
Perth Glory stalwart Jamie Harnwell is almost certain to miss the start of the new
A-League campaign after suffering what appeared to be a serious hamstring injury in
the club's 1-0 pre-season win over North Queensland on Saturday.
Harnwell pinged his hamstring in the 36th minute after leaping high for a header in
the box.
The 31-year-old was left writhing in pain on the turf for several minutes and bashed
his fist on the ground as medical staff attended to him.
Harnwell was clearly distraught as he was stretchered off, with his hands over his
face.
The injury marred what was a promising performance from the Glory, who were keen to
atone for last Wednesday's 5-0 humiliation at the hands of Fulham.
And it was Harnwell who opened the scoring in the 17th minute after starting up
front with Mile Sterjovski.
Sterjovski latched on to a pin-point cross from Victor Sikora and headed across to
Harnwell, who rose high to head the ball over the line from point-blank range.
Perth dominated possession in the opening half and created a number of golden
chances, with Sterjovski coming close on two occasions.
In contrast, Fury striker Jeremy Brockie was starved of opportunities, with Perth's
new defensive pairing of Andy Todd and Chris Coyne rock solid.
But the second-half introduction of marquee striker Robbie Fowler, Robbie Middleby
and David Williams sparked the Fury to life.
Fowler's exquisite touch set his teammates up time and again but the Liverpool
legend squandered several chances when it was his turn to pull the trigger.
His best chance came in the 93rd minute, when Williams made a sizzling run down the
left and centred the ball to Fowler in the box.
But the unmarked Englishman shot wide from just 8m out in the final act of the match.
Former Bundesliga striker Branko Jelic came on in the 63rd minute for his Glory
debut but missed three good chances, including a volley from just 5m out and a
close-range header which he sent high.
