FM To The US Envoy To Syria: Iraq’s Democratic Path Is Irreversible

Baghdad / NINA /-Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein affirmed that Iraq remains committed to its democratic path, the consolidation of state institutions, and the rejection of any form of dictatorship after decades of suffering under authoritarian rule.
The remarks came during Hussein’s meeting with U.S. Presidential Envoy for the Syrian File, Thomas Barak, on the sidelines of the Doha Forum. Hussein reviewed the stages Iraq has gone through since 2003 in establishing its democratic course, as well as the complex challenges that accompanied these transformations.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hussein reiterated that Iraq is steadfast in its democratic choice and institution-building efforts, emphasizing that the Iraqi people’s will, embodied in the federal and democratic system enshrined in the constitution, is a firmly established path that has no alternative despite ongoing challenges.
The minister also expressed the Iraqi government’s surprise at recent statements made by the U.S. envoy regarding Iraq’s internal situation, stressing that it is important for external assessments to accurately reflect the political progress and relative stability achieved in the country.
The meeting also touched on developments in the Syrian file. Hussein underscored the need for the fair representation of all components of the Syrian people within the political process and the importance of launching comprehensive national dialogue. He reiterated Iraq’s readiness to provide support and consultation, drawing upon its own experience in managing political and security crises.
For his part, Barak expressed his appreciation for the historical and political overview presented by the foreign minister regarding Iraq before and after 2003. He affirmed that the U.S. administration respects the Iraqi experience, clarifying that his recent remarks pertained specifically to aspects of the American experience in Iraq.
