Iraq, U.S. Discuss Expanding Strategic Cooperation and Supporting Investment Climate

Baghdad / NINA / -Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein stressed the importance of strengthening coordination between Iraq and the United States, particularly in the fields of economy, infrastructure, and investment, in a way that supports development efforts and encourages the return of American companies to operate in Iraq.

This came during his meeting on Tuesday with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Michael Regas, where both sides discussed ways to advance bilateral relations and expand joint cooperation in political, economic, and security fields, according to a statement by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hussein called for a reassessment of U.S. travel warnings to Iraq, given the improved security conditions in the country, emphasizing the need to facilitate investment opportunities and attract international companies.

The meeting also addressed regional and international developments and the challenges facing the region, with both sides underscoring the importance of easing tensions and supporting dialogue, particularly regarding the situations in Syria and Iran, in order to bolster regional stability and security.

Hussein reviewed the current political landscape following the elections, stressing the need to expedite the formation of the federal government within constitutional timelines, ensuring balance among political forces and enabling the activation of the parliament and government to effectively implement their programs.

He also praised the upcoming opening of the U.S. Consulate in Erbil, while reiterating the importance of reopening the U.S. Consulate in Basra to further enhance diplomatic cooperation.

For his part, Regas expressed the United States’ appreciation for the progress Iraq has made in strengthening security and stability, affirming Washington’s continued support for Iraq in addressing economic, political, and security challenges within the framework of a positive and constructive bilateral partnership./ End
