UN Envoy: Iraq Has Triumphed Over Terrorism and Embarks on a New Chapter

Baghdad / NINA /- The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan, affirmed that Iraq has achieved victory over terrorism thanks to the resilience of its people and the international support it has received over the past years.

In a briefing before the UN Security Council dedicated to Iraq’s situation, Al-Hassan stated that “the road toward peace and stability has been long and arduous,” noting that the session comes ahead of the conclusion of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), marking its final mandate.

He emphasized that the end of UNAMI’s mission does not signify the cessation of UN cooperation with Iraq, but rather “the beginning of a new chapter” in supporting the country.

Al-Hassan added that Iraq has overcome complex challenges on its path to consolidating stability and succeeded in organizing elections characterized by transparency and high voter turnout. He expressed confidence that the formation of the new Iraqi government will not face significant delays.

He also highlighted the Iraqi government’s commitment to addressing the issue of citizens returning from Al-Hol camp in Syria, confirming the successful repatriation of more than 20,000 displaced persons./ End
