RM20 Million Malaysia-Indonesia Film Projects Announced At JAFF Market 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s film industry continues to draw regional attention with the announcement of four Malaysia-Indonesia collaborations worth RM20 million at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival Market (JAFF Market) 2025.

The three-day event at the Jogja Expo Centre in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, ends on Dec 1.

The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) said the four movie projects, which will bring together top talents from both Malaysia and Indonesia, are Munafik, Khurafat, Khadam and Badut Gendong.

“This collaboration reflects the growing confidence of Indonesian industry partners in Malaysia’s filmmaking talent and infrastructure. It also strengthens Malaysia’s efforts to penetrate the regional market through the unification of the Nusantara production ecosystem,” FINAS said in a statement on Monday.

The Guntur Soeharjanto-directed remake of Munafik, currently in post-production and starring Indonesian actors Arya Saloka and Acha Septriasa, is in collaboration with Unlimited Productions, Skop Productions, Komet Productions, A&Z Films and Legacy Pictures.

Khurafat, once a groundbreaking horror phenomenon in Malaysia and directed by Syamsul Yusof, will also be remade for the Indonesian market, with the new version to be directed by Zahir Omar and involving key Indonesian creative talents.

Productions from the two countries will also collaborate on the Malaysian horror-drama film Khadam, starring Aghniny Haque and Remy Ishak, directed by Shamyl Othman, with Entertainment as the new executive producer. The project also involves Red Communications, Komet Productions, Sil-Metropole and Applause Entertainment.

Another project is the Charles Gozali-directed Indonesian horror film Badut Gendong, in collaboration with Malaysian producers, including Komet Productions, Skop Productions and Astro Shaw. The film stars Marthino Lio, Dayinta Melira, Clara Bernadeth and Derby Romero.

“FINAS continues to strengthen the national film ecosystem by leading the Malaysian delegation to JAFF Market 2025 with 12 local production companies, with a focus on driving strategic Malaysia-Indonesia collaborations to expand the presence of Nusantara content in the ASEAN market,” it added.

FINAS believes that more joint projects can be realised in the future, in line with the government’s commitment to strengthening the creative industry through talent development, world-class studio facilities and filming incentives, such as the Film in Malaysia Incentive (FIMI).

Malaysian companies participating at the Malaysia booth are Skop Productions, Komet Productions, Infinitus Productions, 555 Film, Suraya Film Production & Distribution, Rubber Tapper Production House, Red Intrade, SOL Pictures, Creative Stew Production, Kristal Azmir, Sheunik and D Ayu Pictures.

In addition to FINAS’ official participation, several Malaysian companies also set up their own booths, including Rumah Karya Citra, represented by director and actress Erma Fatimah, and the Chinese Film Association of Malaysia.
