Hat Yai Flood Cleanup Underway, 138 Confirmed Dead

SONGKHLA, Dec 1 (TNA) - Residents of flood-hit Hat Yai continue their tough recovery, flocking to local markets to secure essential cleanup supplies and household goods

The official death toll from the disaster has reached 138, according to the Ministry of Public Health. Dr. Sakda Alapach, Deputy Permanent Secretary, reported that the figure, as of 4:00 PM on November 30, includes 73 deaths directly from the floods and 65 deaths occurring in hospitals.

The Institute of Forensic Medicine at Songkhlanagarind Hospital, the central receiving point for the deceased, remained quiet. Bodies are being held in refrigerated containers, as families prioritize home cleanup over collecting bodies for rites. Officials estimate relatives will begin claiming bodies within the next seven days.

At the Paradise Fountain roundabout, a line of residents waited for critical aid. Donors are supplying essentials, including drinking water, instant noodles, canned goods, and baby diapers.

Meanwhile, local merchants are reopening stalls, selling a mix of salvaged and new goods. The highest demand items are water pumps, high-pressure washers for mud removal, and basic cleaning supplies. Fresh food and seafood sales are also available as life slowly resumes. -819 (TNA)
