Tropical Storm Kalmaegi Weakens, Moves into Ubon Ratchathani

UBONRATCHATHANI, Nov 7 (TNA) - Tropical Storm Kalmaegi weakened into a tropical depression early on Friday, November 7, before moving into Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province, bringing heavy rain and strong winds across the upper parts of the country.

The system, which was a depression in southern Champasak province, Laos, at 7 a.m. local time, entered Si Rinthorn district in Ubon Ratchathani between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., moving west at 30 km per hour.

Kalmaegi is expected to increase rainfall and bring heavy to very heavy downpours in some areas of upper Thailand from November 7-9, with the Northeast forecast to be hit hardest, particularly Ubon Ratchathani, Amnat Charoen, Sisaket, Yasothon, Surin, Roi Et, Maha Sarakham, Buri Ram, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

In the municipal area of Ubon Ratchathani, the morning saw light rain, overcast skies, and gusty winds.

Authorities warned that the storm's intensity was expected to increase throughout the day. In anticipation of potential damage from dense rainfall over the next one to two days, the provincial government has ordered the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office and other relief units to stand by.

These preparations are aimed at providing immediate assistance to residents and mitigating potential damage to homes located in low-lying and riverside areas. -819 (TNA)
