National Wildlife Center Releases Rehabilitated Loggerhead, Green Turtles at Abu Ali Island

Riyadh, November 6, 2025, SPA -- The National Center for Wildlife released a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) on Abu Ali Island in the Jubail Marine protected area after months of treatment and rehabilitation. The release is the first such release of rehabilitated marine animals in the Arabian Gulf under the center’s programs.
The rescue began after a report of two exhausted sea turtles on the Arabian Gulf coast. They were transferred to veterinary facilities, where tests and X-rays showed general stress, internal bacterial infection, and buoyancy imbalance. After targeted care and rehabilitation, the turtles were cleared for release.
The loggerhead was fitted with an Argos satellite tracker to monitor movements and migration and to support the center’s marine research and monitoring.
The center said the release is part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate endangered wildlife and return it to its natural habitats to help conserve marine biodiversity.
