Foreign Minister attends UN 80th anniversary celebration

New York, Sep. 22 (BNA): Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the United Nations’ 80th anniversary celebration at its headquarters in New York, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

Also present were Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Women; Ambassador Jamal Faris Al Ruwaie, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the UN in New York; Ambassador Khaled Yousef Al Jalahma, Undersecretary for Political Affairs; Ambassador Shaikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director General of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and the minister’s accompanying delegation.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a speech on the occasion, recalling that the United Nations was created as a place where all nations large and small could come together to address challenges no country can solve alone. He noted that over the years, the Organisation has led the way to some of humanity’s greatest triumphs, including the eradication of smallpox, healing the ozone layer, and, above all, the prevention of a third world war.

He stressed that the United Nations must be defended and strengthened through the 2030 Agenda, the Pact for the Future and the UN80 initiative. Success, he said, depends on unity, and the way forward is collective action, pursued with clarity, courage and conviction, to realise the promise of peace.

Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th General Assembly, said the UN Charter embodies a commitment to preventing humanity from repeating the darkest chapters of history, grounded in principles of cooperation and humility. She emphasised that, at a critical historical juncture, previous leaders chose collaboration over division.

She described the Assembly’s slogan, "Better Together," as a statement reflecting the need for unity, emphasising the importance of addressing challenges through dialogue rather than division, and making necessary decisions when required.

Dr. Al Zayani expressed Bahrain’s pride in the prominent role the UN plays in the international community by promoting cooperation and partnerships at all levels. He underlined the Kingdom’s commitment to continue developing cooperation with the UN and its agencies, enhancing strategic partnerships, and expanding horizons to meet shared goals, wishing the organisation ongoing progress and success.
