Foreign Minister meets Russian counterpart in Sochi

Sochi, Sep. 11 (BNA): Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, on the sidelines of the Eighth Joint Ministerial Meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Russian Federation.

The two ministers reviewed the longstanding relations between Bahrain and Russia and their steady progress across various domains under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Excellency Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.

Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the economic, commercial, investment, and development sectors, within the framework of existing agreements and the work of the Joint Governmental Committee for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting also addressed Bahrain’s non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, and means to enhance cooperation, coordination, and the exchange of expertise on international issues under consideration by the Council.

The ministers further exchanged views on regional and international developments, in particular ongoing Arab and international efforts to end the war in the Gaza Strip. They underscored the urgent need for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages and detainees, the unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance, and the importance of supporting efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

They also discussed a number of political issues of mutual concern, including the situation in Ukraine and regional disputes, and their implications for regional and international peace and security.

The meeting was attended by Ahmed Abdulrahman Al Saati, Bahraini Ambassador to the Russian Federation, and Saeed Abdulkhaliq, Chief of the Coordination and Follow-up Sector at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with the accompanying delegation.
