Saudi Irrigation Organization Participates in ICID Meeting in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, September 10, 2025, SPA -- CEO of the Saudi Irrigation Organization (SIO) Mohammed bin Zaid Abu-Haid participated in the third meeting of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), held in the presence of members of the High Level Advisory Group in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of the fourth World Irrigation Forum (WIF4).
Abu-Haid delivered a speech in which he emphasized that the issue of irrigation is no longer solely an agricultural matter but has become a strategic focus related to a country’s ability to enhance national resilience, food security, and environmental sustainability.
He noted that countries located in water-scarce regions face major challenges, particularly given that the agricultural sector accounts for the largest share of water use, and that the main water sources supplying agriculture in the Kingdom are largely non-renewable, making this a strategic priority for the Kingdom’s water sector.
He pointed out that the Kingdom is working toward sustainable and reusable water sources, noting that the SIO plays a pivotal role in this transition through a clear vision focused on capacity building and excellence in managing and developing the irrigation and reclaimed water sectors, as well as regulating the water sector to achieve sustainability.
Concluding his speech, Abu-Haid extended an invitation to the ICID members and international partners to participate in the 11th World Water Forum, scheduled to be held in 2027 in Riyadh.
During the meeting, members emphasized the importance of recognizing that modernizing irrigation and agricultural infrastructure, based on the principles of integrated water resources management, is crucial for ensuring sustainable food security in the face of climate change, water scarcity, and growing food demand.
