Security forces ready for ASEAN ministerial meeting in Phuket

BANGKOK, July 14 (TNA) – Thai Supreme Commander Gen. Songkitti Jaggabatara on Tuesday reaffirmed that the countrry’s security personnel were able to ensure safety for participants and the public during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers meeting in the southern province of Phuket which opens later this week.

Gen. Songkitti expressed confidence that the military forces as well as police and civilian security personnel are ready for the ASEAN meeting July 17-23 under the terms of the Internal Security Act (ISA) imposed in Phuket over a radius of five kilometres.

However, Gen. Songkitti declined to give details of the security plan.

He said that the security units, including the Internal Security Operation Command (ISOC), would cooperate to prevent disruption and allow the meeting to run smoothly.

Gen. Songkitti expressed confidence that no chaotic demonstration or protest by groups aims to disrupt the upcoming meeting could occur.

Thailand will host the 42nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), the Post Ministerial Conferences (PMC) and the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in Phuket beginning Friday through next Thursday.

The upcoming event in Phuket follows the abortive ASEAN Summit and related April meetings in Pattaya, which were cancelled after the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) stormed the meeting venue.

If any groups want to gain the attention of the government on any issue, they should submit their letters or petitions to officials in Bangkok, said Gen. Songkitti. (TNA)
