BSA participates in space sustainability panel discussion

Manama, Aug. 25 (BNA): Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Aseeri, CEO of the Bahrain Space Agency (BSA), participated in an open panel discussion on the overview effect, the change in perspective experienced by astronauts when seeing Earth from space.
The session featured astronaut Eiman Jahangir and international experts in space philosophy and explored how the human perspective of Earth from space shapes future approaches to space sustainability and supports efforts to ensure a safe environment on Earth.
Dr. Al Aseeri noted that the dialogue, organised in collaboration with the Frank White Institute and the Space Debris Foundation, addressed three key themes. The first centred on existential transformation, considering how viewing Earth from space reshapes human awareness of global responsibility, beyond political boundaries, and highlights the fragility of the ecosystem. The second focused on space sustainability, stressing the need to shift from a "space colonisation" mindset to one of "responsible stewardship", particularly as the number of satellites is expected to exceed 60,000 by 2030. The third theme highlighted the unity of human destiny and the close interconnection between humanity and Earth in the face of global challenges.
He said the session was important for understanding the strategic outlook of space institutions in the coming era, highlighting the agency’s focus on adopting the principle of "space stewardship", particularly in debris management and sustainable mission design. He noted that astronaut experiences can inspire teams to develop solutions that protect the planet and reinforce Bahrain’s role in promoting space ethics endorsed by the UN and international bodies. He also noted the need for awareness initiatives based on the overview effect to encourage environmental responsibility and instil these values in future generations.
Dr. Al Aseeri added that the perspective from space serves as a reminder of humanity’s responsibility to safeguard a shared cosmic heritage. He highlighted that Bahrain’s participation in the panel reflects its commitment to turning such insights into practical policies, from protecting orbital environments from debris to designing environmentally responsible payloads.
He affirmed that the Kingdom remains committed to applying best practices, integrating sustainable design principles in space projects, and engaging positively with international institutions to contribute effectively to global sustainable development.
