Petrolimex introduces sustainable aviation fuel, cutting emissions by up to 80%
Hanoi, August 18 (VNA) – As the global aviation sector faces mounting pressure to decarbonise and reach net zero emissions by 2050, Petrolimex (ticker: PLX) and Petrolimex Aviation have officially unveiled sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Vietnam, a product said to reduce lifecycle carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
At the recent launch in Hanoi, Petrolimex Aviation also signed SAF offtake agreements with Vietjet and Associated Energy Group, LLC (AEG Fuels). Produced from renewable feedstocks, SAF is widely regarded as a key pathway for aviation to achieve net zero goals.
Petrolimex is the first enterprise in Vietnam to import synthetic blending components (SBC) derived from bio-based or renewable sources and to master SAF blending technology compliant with international standards EI 1533, ASTM D7566 and DEF STAN 91-091, as well as Vietnam’s TCVN 14414:2025.
Petrolimex’s SAF has already been supplied and uplifted for domestic commercial flights. The SAF blending system at the Nha Be Petroleum Terminal has been recognised as a flagship project marking Petrolimex’s 70th anniversary.
Petrolimex Chairman Pham Van Thanh said: “Petrolimex has proactively invested in, researched and mastered SAF blending technology, underscoring our strong commitment to the green transition and partnering with the Government, airlines and society at large towards sustainable development.”
Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam Director Uong Viet Dung noted that the introduction of SAF carries strategic significance beyond commercial value, laying the groundwork for a domestic, internationally compliant SAF supply chain and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders.
Petrolimex Aviation’s supply and refuelling system is certified to ISCC EU and ISCC CORSIA, leading international standards for sustainability and carbon reduction.
General Director of Petrolimex Aviation Nguyen Van Hoc said the certifications attest to the company’s capability and professionalism, adding that the firm stands ready to work with partners at home and abroad towards a greener, safer and more sustainable aviation industry.
Under the agreement with Vietjet, the first 1,200 cubic metres of SAF blended in Vietnam will be uplifted for the carrier’s flights, accompanied by Proof of Sustainability in line with ISCC EU criteria.
Vietjet’s Standing Deputy General Director To Viet Thang said the cooperation would help the airline’s modern fleet significantly cut emissions, pioneer the use of clean fuel and contribute to green growth goals.
Petrolimex Aviation has also partnered with AEG Fuels — a leading international SAF supplier — to expand its network globally, bringing Vietnam-produced SAF to international customers and supporting aviation’s green transition./.
